Top Ten Movies Every Film Buff Should See

Are you a true blue lover of films? If you are, then like any hardcore film buff, you’re probably
completing a list for your movie marathon this weekend. Before you finish it, take a look at our
titles and see if there’s anything you would want to add to your own. Our list is a combination of
classics, feel good movies, and coming of age. We put in a little mind screw, too, just because .

Road To Perdition

10. Road To Perdition

Tom Hanks has come a long way from his typical rom-com leading guy characters in the
eighties. Over the years, he’s produced some serious work like Castaway, The Green Mile,
Saving Private Ryan, and the more recent Captain Phillips. However, despite the rave reviews
when it first came out, movie goers seem to have forgotten the 2002 release of Road To
Perdition. For all those who follow the recent trend of comic book to film adaptation, the story
of Road To Perditionremains to be the cream of the crop. Directed and produced by no less
than Sam Mendes, the same genius who brought us American Beauty, this film is a great
piece of cinematographic art. Unlike most gangster theme movies that thrive on being
flamboyant and extravagant, the setting for Road To Perdition is highly muted from the
background down to the costumes to relay the coldness of the violence happening all around
the main characters. Highly controlled directing, great acting, and a perfect story line; it has all
the ingredients to make a quality film.

Avatar

9. Avatar

No, not the mess made by M. Knight Shyamalan but the epic adventure film byJames
Cameron. Think of Avatar as the love child of a perfect marriage between vision and timing. If
James Cameron was a rockstar to nerds when he made the Terminator-verse, he elevated
himself to demi-god when Avatar came out. This film is loved by geeks every where not just for
the cool factor of the effects. Cameron has been creating artwork that resemble Avatar’s
background since he can remember. He even started seeing the trees in his dreams. In 1994,
he had the chance to develop the concept but the technology wasn’t quite there yet in order to
execute his vision well. So instead, he started working on the screenplay and invented Na’vi
language with a linguist at USC. Finally, in the mid to late 2000′s Cameron was at the forefront
of a bunch of breakthroughs in cinematography that included a new motion capture animation
technology and an early version of cloud computing to keep track of all Avatar’s huge data. The
acting might not win any Oscar’s but it did take lot of awesome work to make this film look no
less than stunning.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

8. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

We know that he’s very capable of making serious films like The Magestic and The Truman
Show but who knew that Jim Carey could do so well in a dark, romantic film? Eternal Sunshine
Of The Spotless Mind is the first on the mind screw films on our list. It’s gloomy, twisted,
painful, and incredibly brilliant. Elijah Wood playing a douchy twenty something instead of a
gentle hobbit is a wonderfully satisfying bonus, too. If you wanted to feel the height of
desperation brought by the extreme need to hold on to the memory of someone you love, then
grab a bowl of popcorn because this film is for you.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (American Version)

7. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (American Version)

If you’re looking for a film with a strong female character, look no further than The Girl With The
Dragon Tattoo. This film shocks its viewers faster than they can say “Justice porn!”. Movie
purists would argue that the remake of the Swedish film was redundant. Nevertheless, Rooney
Mara just absolutely killed it as Lisbeth Salander. If you want to see an actress brilliantly
playing her charater, then add this film to your list.

MARY POPPINS, Julie Andrews, 1964

6. Mary Poppins

When you need to take a break from all the heaviness of the previous films, go
seeMary Poppins. We guarantee that nothing on earth can make you feel happier
than Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke singing and dancing together. Mary Poppins
is more than a feel good family film. Before Avatar, before The Matrix, Mary Poppins
was the best of the best in the special effects department. They even got an Oscar to
prove it. This is because it was produced by none other than Walt Disneyhimself.
Mary Poppins also won Best Actress, Best Original Music Score, and Best Original
Song which makes this film a huge deal in the history of cinema.

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

5. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

Another feel good blast from the past is Willy Wonka And The Chocolate
Factory.Author Roald Dahl actually had a hand in the filming of this movie. His first
choice for Willy Wonka didn’t pan out neither did his second. Ten actors were
considered befoe Gene Wilder stepped in to fill the role. Johnny Depp is one of the
most talented actors of our time but watch this film to find out why his adaptation
of the great chocolate maker cannot hold a candle to Gene Wilder.

Shawshank Redemption

4. Shawshank Redemption

Every film buff has a go to movie about innocence and the resiliency of the human
spirit. This one is ours. Three words: Go watch it.

Vertigo

3. Vertigo

Alfred Hitchcock is better known for creating one of the world’s most popular
villain: Norman Bates. Ironically, critics agree that Psycho was not his best film.
Vertigo is. A lot of movie geeks insist that it’s still the best mind screw film of all
time. We happen to agree. If you feel like wanting to pull your hair out of frustration
before the credits roll, you will love Vertigo.

Citizen Kane

2. Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane is ranked the number one movie of all time but we opted to make it
second on our list. Allow us to argue later. Orson Welles directed, co-wrote,
produced, and acted in this film so it was the perfect execution of his vision.
Essentially, Welles wanted an ordinary story told from different points of view. If
you’re the existential type who wonders about the meaning of life through art and
film, then you will appreciate Citizen Kane. The words “Rosebud” will forever change
your life. Simple, elegant, and powerful, Citizen Kane should be a movie to watch
every year or so.

The Godfather

1. The Godfather

The Godfather consistently ranks second to Citizen Kane every other list but ours.
We just cannot deny its pure awesomeness. Directed by the great Francis Ford
Copolla and stars seasoned actors like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Forget about the
James Bond franchise, The Godfather fulfills every fantasy you could ever think of.
You have guns, you have gangsters, you have a nice tortured father-son relationship
going. More importantly, you have a solid screenplay and equally solid actors. At the
end of the day, The Godfather does what a movie is supposed to do: capture your
attention for hours and entertain you. The Godfather is the mother of all trilogies
before trilogies was even a thing. Don’t miss it.
